Combustible Materials and Fire Retardents

All fabrics will burn but some are more combustible than others. Untreated natural fibers such as cotton, linen and silk burn more readily than wool, which is more difficult to ignite and burns with a low flame velocity.
The weight and weave of the fabric will affect how easily the material will ignite and burn. Recommended fabrics are materials with a tight weave. Heavy, tight weave fabrics will burn more slowly than loose weave, light fabrics of the same material. The surface texture of the fabric also affects flammability. Fabrics with long, loose, fluffy pile or “brushed” nap will ignite more readily than fabrics with a hard, tight surface, and in some cases will result in flames flashing across the fabric surface.
Most synthetic fabrics, such as nylon, acrylic or polyester resist ignition. However, once ignited, the fabrics melt. This hot, sticky, melted substance causes localized and extremely severe burns. When natural and synthetic fibers are blended, the hazard may increase because the combination of high rate of burning and fabric melting usually will result in serious burns. In some cases, the hazard may be greater than that of either fabric individually.
Curtains, draperies and other articles in the home can have their burning rates reduced with flame retardants applied through chemical treatment. Such flame-retardant treatment after manufacturing is not recommended for clothing.
In terms of flammability, silk may be the worst with a high burning rate, which may be increased by the dyes and other additives to provide color.
Cotton and linen also have a high burning rate but this can be alleviated by the application of flame-retardant chemical additives.
Acetate and triacetate are as flammable or slightly less flammable than cotton. However, they can be made flame-retardant with chemical treatment.
Nylon, polyester and acrylic tend to be slow to ignite but once ignited, severe melting and dripping occurs.
Wool is comparatively flame-retardant. If ignited, it usually has a low burning rate and may self-extinguish.
Glass fibers and moacrylic are almost flame-resistant. These synthetic fibers are designed and manufactured to possess flame-retardant properties.
What is a Fire Retardant
People unfamiliar with fire retardants are surprised to hear that wood or fabric can qualify as a non-combustible material to a certain degree. Should a fire strike, the chemicals react with combustible gases and tars normally generated by the material. The tars are converted to carbon char which forms on the surface, slowing the burning rate . The combustible gases are rendered nonflammable for the most part due to dilution with harmless carbon dioxide and water vapor released in the reaction. This happens automatically, driven by the heat of the fire, and requires no coating maintenance, batteries, or plumbing; it is true passive protection.
According to the NFPA’s National Fire Safety Survey findings: Although the U.S. has a higher fire death rate than Canada, Western Europe and the Pacific Rim, the majority of Americans are very confident about their fire safety. Older adults express the greatest confidence even though they have the greatest risk of fire death. Men are more confident about fire safety than women; although, of the two groups, men are at a higher risk of fire death. The majority of Americans feel safest from fire in their homes, when in truth, home fires account for roughly 80% of all fires – and they pose the greatest threat to life.
The cost of operating public fire prevention services in the U.S. costs the taxpayers billions of dollars per year, most of which is spent on suppression of fire. Many people have the attitude that “fire only happens to other people.” But until fire strikes their home and family, fire prevention is ignored. Once fire prevention week comes and goes each October, little thought is given to fire safety and prevention until next year’s campaign. Fire suppression is a necessary and vitally important service. It is, however, “after-the-fact”. This includes smoke detectors, alarms, sprinklers and extinguishers. The use of fire retardants or firestops is logical “before-the-fact” steps that should be taken. Fire spreads 1100% in the first 4 minutes. Heat rises at 90 feet per second or approximately 60 mph.
Approximately 90% of fire fatalities are in the home and 90% of the fatalities occur during the sleeping hours 10pm to 6am. Remember, smoke alarms and sprinklers cannot prevent the fire, but fire retardants in most cases can prevent and/or slow the spread of fire, which can greatly prevent lose of life and property in addition to using smoke alarms or sprinklers. By applying fire retardants to your curtains, furniture, carpeting, etc., is very easy and is an added safety precaution for smokers and small children in the home. Your home and family deserve the best fire protection possible, so why not invest in it.

Mobile Home Dealers Around the US

Mobile homes are an inexpensive type of housing for the Americans. It was seen as an alternative for those who cannot afford to build their home in the traditional manner or rent an apartment.
Everybody dreams of owning a house of their own where they will raise and nurture their family. However, not all are able to do so because they are not financially capable. The advent of mobile homes gave this dream a chance to become a reality. Mobile homes may be like on-site built homes but may not have the advantages of the latter. The thing that matters most is the affordability of buying a home, since mobile homes are less expensive than the traditionally built homes.
All homes that were made prior to 1976 are known as “mobile homes” but since the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUB) implemented stricter rules in relation to the quality and standards of these factory made homes, all homes made from the year 1976 onwards will be called “manufactured homes”.
These homes are actually made and manufactured inside factories. They come in two sizes: the singlewide and the doublewide. This is even though there may be triple-wide and other sizes, but these types are rarely made. These manufactured homes are transported to the areas where it will be occupied by tractor-trailers. They may stay in these areas for a long period of time.
Hence, the ability to move to another place is still possible. However, at present, once these manufactured homes have been built and transported to a specified area, it is usually left permanently there.
In comparison to the traditionally built home, usually you won’t be able to distinguish the difference between the two. This is because both are made of the same materials. Thus, unlike the site-built homes, manufactured homes tend to depreciate in value just like motor vehicles. However, with the double-wide, which were built with higher quality and are able to meet the standard of the building codes of certain areas, they are able to prevent further depreciation.
Plus, due to the rapid depreciation of modular homes, it has affected the surrounding structures around it, causing distress in the area where a manufactured home will be moving. This factor led to the application of zoning regulations and the limitation of the number of modular homes that can be placed in a certain area. Single-wide homes were discouraged because of its rapid depreciation as compared to the double-wide home.
Moreover, due to the spaciousness and the similarity of the double-wide with the traditionally built homes, it has become the preferred choice of manufactured homes. In fact, single wide units are still sold and are used as temporary housings for areas that are affected by natural disasters.
California, Alabama, Indiana, and Texas are the most popular states that purchase manufactured homes. The demand for housing continues to grow and presently people are treating the new, higher end modular homes like the traditional home. More people are now making this as an alternative and a way to own their own dream house.
To know more about manufactured homes and to have a good deal, here are the known manufacturers and dealers of modular homes in the U.S.

Bc Homeowners Face Tough Times When Flooding Strikes

Residents of Southern BC have faced tough weather conditions this winter, with buckets of snow wreaking havoc on transportation arteries throughout the mainland as well as Vancouver Island. Rising temperatures and heavy rains are now causing the snow to melt quickly, which is overwhelming waterways and flooding streets and houses. Chilliwack, for instance has declared a State of Emergency due to dangerous flood conditions. Mudslides are also hitting some homeowners in the Fraser Valley, putting not only property, but lives at risk. The melting snow and rain have caused an overflow in Victoria’s sewage system, which has resulted in untreated waste flowing into the waters of the eastern coastline. With flood waters hitting so many BC communities, homeowners need to know what to do to protect their homes in the event of a flood. The first thing that BC homeowners need to be aware of is the fact that natural flooding is not covered by standard homeowners insurance. In the event that your pipes burst or city water mains fail, you will be covered for any water damage incurred, but cases of overland flooding are not covered. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, flood insurance is not available in BC because it would not be cost effective. In general, only those who live in high risk areas are willing to pay for flood insurance, which means that insurance premiums would cost homeowners a mint. Flood insurance would only be feasible if more people were willing to pay for it; it would even out the mix of high- and -low risk policy holders, making it a more viable venture for providers. Some areas are now eligible for financial aid under the Disaster Financial Assistance Program, which is run by the Ministry of Public Safety. This plan is designed to assist homeowners and small business owners whose property has been damaged from an event that is not covered by standard insurance, such as overland flooding. Those who qualify for assistance can receive up to 80% coverage for damages that are between $1000 and $300,000. Areas that have been approved for assistance from the recent floods and mudslides include Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Surrey, Langley, the Fraser Valley Regional District, and communities along Southern Vancouver Island. If you live within one of these areas, you must submit an application within 90 days of the approved event. To apply, visit the Provincial Emergency Program website at pep.bc.ca.If you’re concerned about flooding in your own home, the best thing you can do is to minimize the amount of water that can get inside the house. If possible, have sewer backflow valves installed to keep floodwaters and sewage from backing up into your drains. If this isn’t feasible, you can minimize backflow by stopping all drains with drain plugs, weighing down your toilet lids to keep them closed, and disconnecting dishwashers and washing machines. Line up sandbags around the perimeter of your home and in front of any vents or openings. If you can’t find sandbags locally, fill pillowcases with soil from your garden. Move everything of value (including important documents) to higher ground. If you have more than one story, move everything to the highest floor. Appliances and furniture should be raised as high as possible, and you should be prepared to turn off gas, water, and electricity. Make sure to have food supplies, bottled drinking water, flashlights, medications, batteries, and a first aid kit with you on an upper floor, and don’t forget to grab your pets, some food for them, and a litter tray.

Why build a timber framed home?

A timber frame home provides its owners with a whole list of benefits. In no particular order, here are a few:  Beauty, strength, design flexibility, energy efficiency, quicker build times, and increased resale values.

In Canada we have a rich tradition of building with wood, especially in provinces like British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec where a vibrant forestry industry has been a major engine in their respective economies for centuries.  Who wouldn’t want the warmth, grace and character of heavy timbers on the inside of their home?  Enter timber framing, one of the oldest methods of building in the world, which involves the use of heavy timbers joined together with furniture-like mortise & tenon joinery, and hardwood pegs.

On top of providing beauty and warmth to a home, the sheer size of the timbers makes the home very study and long lasting – existing timber frames in Europe have been around for over 800 years.  As well as strength, you get design flexibility from a post and beam home.  Due to the fact that the large posts in the home take all the vertical loads, interior partition walls can be placed anywhere – or not at all – depending on how open a floor-plan you want.

The last major benefit of timber frames homes comes in the form of energy efficiency.  The walls and roof system are built around the timber structure, providing clients with an uninterrupted thermal envelope, full of insulation, instead of structural members.  It’s the timber structure on the inside that resists dead and live loads, which allows increased levels of insulation inside the walls.

Finally, with all the craftsmanship and high quality materials found in timber frame homes, it’s no wonder that they consistently out-price similarly sized conventional homes when it comes time to put them on the real-estate market.  With all the benefits associated with timber framing, wouldn’t it make sense to consider it the next time you build?

The Need and Advantages of Canadian Storage Facilities

It is commonly seen that the storeroom, garage or attic in your house is overly stuffed; and one day you find that there is no place to put any more extra things in them. What to do? One option is to build extra storage space in your house but that is also going to be filled up within no time. This situation is quite common throughout Canada. The solution is Canadian storage. It can quite conveniently serve as your personal storehouse. You can keep all the extra goods in the warehouse and keep your house uncluttered. The storehouses are well equipped and would take good care of your goods. Usually such storehouses are hired by people who want to keep their seasonal goods or extra belongings in a safe environment. However, these storage houses also provide a great benefit to people who are relocating – they can keep their goods on a temporary basis while they are on the move.

Types of Storehouses

There are different types of Canadian storage units. They differ in size as well as in the facilities they provide. Some of the units are small, just like a cabinet, providing the customer a chance to safely keep his small belongings. For storing larger items such as furniture, cars, boats and the like, there are larger units. There are different facilities provided by these storehouses and the customer can choose the particular unit depending upon the goods that he wants to store in it. If the goods are meat, fruits or wine that need particular environment or specific temperature then you can keep them in climate controlled units. Items such as electronic goods and paintings need a moisture-free environment. So for them it is required to hire a unit that provides temperature and moisture controlled facility. Some facilities provide highly secured environment such as round the clock CCTV surveillance, guards, burglar alarms etc. If the customer wants to keep his highly expensive goods such as antique jewelry in the storehouse, then he can hire such secured units. However, the important thing here is to first assess the needs of the storage and then only decide about hiring the unit. Naturally, there is no need to spend a fortune for storing summer clothes and golf sets in the storage facilities with highly secured environment. You should not pay for features that are of no use.

With the growing popularity of Canadian storage facilities, today there are storehouses in almost all locations. This helps the customer to choose the location that is nearest to his house or office. This provides him the convenience of accessing the storage facilities whenever the need arises. However, some storage facilities have preset access hours. The customer needs to find out if the access timing suits him or not.

Canadian Storage facilities also provide a great help to people who are relocating. Depending upon their needs, customers can hire a unit with required size, facilities and duration. Accordingly, he would be paying the rent for the size and facilities used. These storehouse facilities provide the most economical solution to customers’ storage needs.

Expansion Sit-Backs – An Amazingly Effective Abdominal Exercise You’ve Probably Never Done Before

There are literally hundreds of abdominal exercise you can choose from. Not only that, most ab exercises have multiple variations which allow for progression through increasing levels of difficulty. With such a wide range of exercise to choose from it’s a shame that so many people keep repeating the same boring workouts over and over again.

If you’re not changing your exercises regularly (continually challenging yourself with more advanced movements as your strength increases), then you’re on your way to staleness, boredom and progress plateaus. If you want to keep improving your abs, week after week, then here is another new abdominal exercise to add to your repertoire: Expansion Sit Backs.

I have had advised against over-dependence on the traditional sit up for many years. Regular sit ups put too much pressure on your low back by using your hip flexors and hamstrings to perform almost 2/3 of the work.

This over-tightens these muscles, pulling your pelvis forward and eventually leading to low back pain.

If you want a six pack, take a pass on the standard sit up, if for no other reason, than because there are better choices.

If you could swap out your old sit ups with a new exercise that could minimize hip flexor and hamstring involvement, maximize abdominal contraction and develop better abs without low back pain, would you do it? Of course you would. And I have just the exercise for this – the Expansion Sit Back. This exercise is not only a favorite of mine, it’s also backed up by many EMG studies that compare hip flexor and abdominal activation. The latest study coming out of Canada indicated that this exercise produced the greatest abdominal activation while minimizing flexor activation.

Just one last bit of background before I show you how it’s done. I first learned of the Expansion Sit Back when I was wrestling in college. I was fanatic about finding exercise programs that would improve my wrestling strength and ability. One day while browsing through the college library, I found a book titled Maximum Performance by Lawrence Moorhouse, the famed exercise kinesiologist from UCLA. This book was a gold mine of information and ahead of its time. Back then there weren’t many conditioning books, tapes or DVD’s, there was no Internet and Jane Fonda was the rage. I read this book one night and came up with my own wrestling conditioning program. A part of this program was the Expansion Sit Back. This is over 25 years ago and I still consider it a good as gold exercise to this day.

An Expansion Sit Back when performed correctly will strengthen the entire abdominal wall, not just your rectus abdominis (the six pack abs muscles). It also minimizes hip flexor action. You will find this exercise challenging and worthwhile as your abdominal core becomes toned and sharp. Please do not over do it. Take your time – that’s how it works best.

How to perform the Expansion Sit Back and its 4 progressive variations.

Starting Position: Sit comfortably on the floor with your knees bent, feet and back on the floor. Keep this neutral posture position during the exercise. Gently place your tongue on the roof of your mouth (this stabilizes your cervical spine) and tilt your chin toward your chest a small amount.

Do not hook your heels or feet under any piece of furniture or have them held down. Doing feet-anchored under is a common practice for standard sit ups, but you are going to do just the opposite.

We are going to eliminate the hip flexor activation by hooking your heels behind an immovable object. Octagon dumbbells that do not roll work, well and power blocks also work great. If you have a partner, have them kneel in front of you and grasp the back of your low leg (Achilles tendon area) and have you pull into the grasp. Do the same with any object. Hook and pull your heels toward your glutes. This is what eliminates the hip flexor from helping. It is called the Law of Reciprocal Inhibition.

Movement: Hook your heels as directed; slowly use your arms to walk your chest to your knees. Place your hands next to your belly button so you can palpate or feel you abdominal wall. Maintain good posture and slowly lean back away from your knees to a position your fell comfortable. As you move away you will notice your abdominals begin to tighten down. Some of you will only be able to go back a few inches before your feel uncomfortable. That is OK!

Now from that position hold it for 15-20 seconds and you will notice your abdominals start to quiver. At this time relax and lay back on the floor, release your heels and rest for 30-45 seconds. Repeat this exercise 3-5 times per session.

You can find more at the web site below

After each workout you will be able to lean back farther and hold the position for 20 seconds before your abs start shaking. When you can slowly lean back and hold your body about 2 inches off the ground and stay there for 20 seconds 3-5 reps with 30-45 seconds rest intervals, you are ready to progress.

This exercise and its advanced progressions will strengthen your abdominal wall, help you develop a 6 pack and also minimize low back pain. It has worked wonders for many of my clients, especially wrestlers and boxers. This is a challenging one, so not all of them “like” it, but do them faithfully because they know it works. Whether you’re an athlete or you just want to look like one, give Expansion sit backs a try – they will work wonders for you too.
